Mueller Continues To Coach and Teach

Mr. Kent Mueller has worked as a teacher at West Central for 20 years, and has been coaching just as long. He was the head basketball coach, where he had an undefeated season, and is now the head football coach. Having coaching experience for many years, he has brought home 15 state titles.
Off the field, Mueller teaches World Geography, World History and Native American Studies. If he had to choose a favorite class, it would be between World History and Native American Studies. Although he enjoys watching all of the 9th graders mature over the year of World Geography, he calls himself “a history guy.”
In his future years at West Central, he is looking forward to helping every team be the best that they can be and coaching his youngest son Jeevan. He also will have to adapt to all the changes that are happening in education.
In his spare time he likes to read interesting books, hunt and fish, work on his landscaping and garden, coach the Schoolers basketball team in the summer, help take care of his grandson, travel and cook new recipes using meat.
His favorite memories at West Central are watching his daughter Kira compete in basketball and track, coaching his son Josh and being a part of the students’ lives.  Mueller has had some disappointments, but he has said all along, “This is the best job in South Dakota, and as long as I wake up every morning looking forward to going to work, I plan on being a part of West Central.”

It was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. All summer I thought, I pondered, weighing the advantages and disadvantages, the pros and the cons my choice would bring. Would it be football or cross country?

I had been playing football for the past three years, and I loved it. But when track arrived, I came closer than ever to reaching my ultimate goal: breaking a five-minute mile. It gave me running fever.  It wasn’t easy, but when summer ended and the first day of fall practice arrived, I was wearing Mizunos, not cleats. Continue Reading

At the end of a long hall in West Central High School, you’ll find Room 9619, a class filled with numbers, calculators, confusion, and learning. You’ll also see the familiar face of Ms. Jamie Nelson, one of the mathematics teachers and assistant basketball coach of West Central.  However, aside from the familiar face, you may not know much about this numerical enthusiast. Hamze Expands Education

Jane Hamze has been teaching for 12 years at West Central. Although she is already taking on full-time teaching, she is also obtaining her master’s degree in chemistry through SDSU. This grueling undertaking will take two and a half years to complete.

Hamze and husband Ted have 24-year-old twin sons and a daughter, Sarah, who is currently a senior. Tired of the restaurant business, Hamze wanted to try something new, but she still helps out with her business during the summer. “It makes me feel good,” Hamze comments. Becoming a teacher was her choice. Her favorite part of teaching is sharing what she knows with others, but her least favorite part is the behavior issues in the classroom.

She attended high school in Ipswich and went through college at SDSU. So how does she balance her own education with teaching her students? She works around the clock 24/7 without much free time. When asked about advice she’d give to students who want to become teachers, she says, “spend LOTS of time job shadowing a teacher before you get the job.” When she retires, she would like to volunteer at an elementary school.
