Yesterday in Harrisburg, the West Central oral interp team spent the day at Regions. With each contestant performing his/her piece only once, you’d expect the day to go more quickly than usual. Yet, it was still an all-day affair. The first round started at 9 a.m., with poetry, drama and readers theater. The second round started much later than expected at 11:30 with duet, serious prose and oratory. With a break for lunch, the last round, humor, started at 1:30. Instead of the normal number of competitors in each round going anywhere from 20 to 40, only nine people performed in each round, with three being advanced to State. Regular superior and superior plus awards were not given, only small medals being awarded to those who qualified for the State competition. Senior Alex Qualm in drama, senior Joe Schartz in oratory, and the duet team of Schartz and sophomore Madison Monahan all qualified for State, with sophomore Riley Riepma making alternate in humor. The State competition will take place in Pierre Dec. 2-3.
