The 2011-12 girls basketball season has been very interesting to say the least. There have been many teams coming out on top that were predicted not to be contenders this season…one of the teams being the West Central Trojans, having only two senior leaders on the entire squad. The girls have found themselves with a record of 6-2, and not only beating their opponents, but beating them by double digits.

The Lady Trojans, being led by Senior Allie Macdonald and Shelby Sieverding, just came off a huge home win against the Madison Bulldogs with a score of 65-40. The Trojans were led by Macdonald, who is averaging 11 points per game.

“We have really turned our game around since our season-opening loss to Harrisburg, and are really looking like a potential front-runner when regions arrive,” says Macdonald. “We are looking forward to the rest of the season and hope to come out on top of our district.”

The Trojans will host the Harrisburg Tigers on Friday, January 13, for a rematch after a close and tragic loss on opening night in Harrisburg. The girls will look to move their record to 8-2.

The 2011 basketball season has a lot of interesting stories embedded in it: one of them being the new gymnasium and the boys team itself. West Central is hoping for a successful and joyous season as the Trojans are returning every starter but one. It should be a big advantage for the team this year, as they return senior starters Jeremy Johnson, Dalton Kuehl, Devon Blaine and junior Mitch Brockhaus.

A rivalry will be brought from the 11A championship football game to the basketball court, as the West Central Trojans will travel to Dell Rapids to take on the Quarriers. This should be a good opening test for the Trojans as the Quarriers return three starters.

West Central will also be introducing their new head coach, Levi Twedt. Twedt was assistant and JV coach for the team last year, but has been a head girls basketball coach in Minnesota. Coach Twedt is looking forward to the upcoming season and is excited to see what his team can accomplish throughout the year with having four returning starters.

My name is Andrew Ideker, and I am currently a senior at West Central High School. I have a wide variety of interests, but my number one priority is baseball. I’m excited to be a senior and will be attending college wherever baseball lands me. It has always been a dream of mine to play baseball at the collegiate level and now I have been working extra hard to get to that level of excellence, and I’m only a year away. I’m also involved in football and look forward to hopefully leading the team to our 12th state championship and first since 2007. Some of my hobbies include working on the farm and hunting during the fall and spring seasons. I enjoy spending time with family and helping out in the community because I feel it is very important to give back to a community which is supplying me with such a great place to live. It’s my last year living free, and I’m excited to get it started and look forward to having a lot of fun.
