The nice weather we’ve had throughout the winter season has only made the anticipation for summer vacation greater.  With only five Mondays left of the 2011-2012 school year, students are finding it harder to pay attention and easier to slack off.

Senior Dylan Brynjulson commented, “I’m extremely excited for summer. I’m looking forward to no school and working to make more money than I am now because I need it for college. I’m slacking off so bad in all of my classes; senioritis hit me like sophomore year. The worst part about summer getting closer is that waking up in the morning seems to be getting harder every day.”

Although “senioritis” is at a high in the school for the senior class, the underclassmen are just as ready to be done with school. “I’m so excited for summer, so I can play more softball,” said sophomore Alanna Schmeichel. Freshman Brite Edberg added, “Yeah, I’m very excited for summer and not having school because it’s a lot less stress to not worry about homework.” Summer can be all fun and games for most high school students, but junior Christian Witt is planning to work all summer. Students may be slacking off as the end comes, but Spanish teacher Kimberly Schmidt is doing everything but that. “I get panicky thinking about all the things I haven’t taught yet,” commented Schmidt.

Being anywhere but school is on students’ minds as summer approaches. Slacking in class, not finishing homework, no motivation to get up in the mornings. Some may call it lazy, but it seems to be a case of summer fever that has hit West Central, and there is nothing more to it.

WCNN: A Challenge and an Adventure of News Media

News Media has been a class offered at West Central for 10 years. First being offered as a basic journalism class, News Media has become so much more. The class includes three sections that are offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors that create vodcasts, podcasts, Livewires (lunchtime newsletters) and monthly news stories.

For the past three years, News Media has become more advanced, largely due to this year’s hard-working seniors, who have worked hard to create the vodcast that is now called WCNN (West Central News Network). Not only have they created WCNN, they have managed to keep it up and running and keep the public entertained. WCNN was created to keep the community informed about school news, but what people might not have expected is that it brings you the news in fun and creative ways.

Creating WCNN was a challenge and adventure all in its own. The seniors who created it and been a part of the News Media staff all of their high school career have more to take away from the class than just WCNN. “I’ve been in News Media for three years, and it has been very beneficial. I’ve got to spend quality time with Joe and Dusty, and it’s helped me with my people skills and writing ability,” said senior Alex Qualm. Senior Dustin Ortman commented, “I have learned to be productive on my own.”

These seniors will be passing on the WCNN production to the younger students in News Media and will be leaving with memories and skills that will help the younger students as they begin a new journey in their lives.

Winter sports are coming to a close, but the Lady Trojan basketball team is just heating up. The girls put up some good fights and traveled far to come out with their record of 16-3, but they aren’t done yet. Coming out of their regular season, the Lady Trojans will compete in the district games in hopes of making it to the state tournament.

As the season progressed, any pessimistic thoughts were diminished. “After reflecting over the season, I feel like we have done so well; we were not expected to be a very good team, but we work so well together that we rise above the others,” sophomore Makenna Macdonald commented. “I think our season has gone very well! We have been working hard and getting along as a team,” added sophomore Brooklyn Ketcham.

The team has had a goal in mind and could be a few games away from achieving that goal. Assistant coach Jamie Nelson commented, “We would love to make the state tournament, and once we achieve that goal, we want to be very competitive during the tournament.”

With hopes high and competition tough, the Lady Trojans can’t help but be optimistic and continue to fight for success.

As the school year is coming to the point of being half over, the West Central juniors are beginning to take future goals into consideration. However, for students to have a chance at those goals, they will have to go to college. Yet, before going to college they have to be accepted. Students take a series of tests to help them get ready for college and see their true potential. To help students get prepared for the multiple tests ahead, a group of teachers’ assistants have come up with a website and are putting together study sessions for students to use to better study for these future tests. The Lady Trojans continued to fight through the very last match in their first round district game against McCook-Montrose. With a couple of rough spots in the season, the team pulled together and managed to show they were better than what people thought. Senior Shelby Sieverding said, “I think we proved ourselves and what we could do. We knew we could do it, and we finally showed how much ability we really have.”screen

The entire team had their thoughts about the season, and it was nothing but positive. “Our season was like a roller coaster with its fair share of high and low times,” said junior Jennifer Wagner, “although in the end we came out playing hard when it mattered.” With thoughts like these and the performance that the team had in their game against McCook, the community can only be proud of what came from the season and players.

The Lady Trojans lost the first round district game to McCook in a four-set game. The girls aren’t hanging their heads, however, as they are proud of what they accomplished. “I feel really good about the way our season ended,” Sieverding commented. “We started really good, and then we kind of got into a slump, but our last game we finished strong.”
