   West Central sophomore Joe Schartz is an active student. He participates in FFA, track, cross country, Student Council, TATU and West Central’s student-mentor program. But somehow in his busy schedule, Schartz has found the time to work his way towards becoming a national champion.

Senior Excels in FFA

   Senior Ashley Fritz is the President of FFA in the West Central Chapter, and she is now competing to become State Officer. She has been in FFA for three years, thanks to her best friend convincing her to join FFA sophomore year. Ashley has shown her leadership qualities by “instead of telling you what to do, she’ll help you through the entire process,” according to Linda Petersen, the FFA advisor. “Ashley has an enthusiastic, cool personality and is not afraid to ask questions.” She will soon be competing in the Flandreau CDE, (or Career Development Event) at the end of March.  She is expected to do well “She usually gets top five in basic competitions,” said Petersen.

Senior plays Senior Citizen in Wedding Singer

   Not many get the opportunity to be a star on the stage, but for those who do, the rewards can be infinite. Anna Bahnson, a senior here at West Central, has taken full advantage of that opportunity. For her entire high school career, Anna has been a part of West Central’s choir, and has participated in at least one play or musical per year. What’s In Your Backpack?

   The lockers here at West Central High School are too skinny to fit the average backpack, and barely large enough to fit more than four text books. For the past few years students have been allowed to carry their backpacks to class. For most students, digging around in their bag is like a miniature scavenger hunt of epic proportions. When looking for an assignment, shifting through piles of old gum wrappers, torn and crumpled papers, and the odd candy wrapper is necessary, till at the very bottom a ragged essay or worksheet is unearthed.
