This is the time of the year when seniors are working hard and trying to get as much scholarship money as possible. It takes dedication and persistence to get resumes, essays and recommendations turned in on time. For one senior, Dave Kroon, hard work was paid off when he received the Forsee Family Foundation Scholarship from South Dakota State University.

The Forsee Family Foundation Scholarship is one of the most prestigious scholarships that SDSU offers. It amounts to $5,000 a year and is renewable for four years, for a total of $20,000. Kroon was selected as part of a group 30 applicants face a series of interviews. The 30 were picked based on their applications to SDSU.

When asked what the most challenging part of the interview was, Kroon replied with, “Waiting for my turn was the hardest part. I kept playing through in my head and imagining what was going to happen. However, once I stepped into the interviewing room, everything went fine.” Kroon will be attending SDSU to major in electrical engineering.

Even though Kroon is destined for bigger and brighter things after high school, he is still going to miss West Central. “I’m going to miss the awesome sports like cross country and track. I will miss the music, like band, choir and the musical. I am going to miss the teachers, you know who you are. I am also going to miss all of my friends, I’m sure you know who you are too.”

Dear Justin and Candice

 Dear Justin and Candice:

I have a big problem right now.  I’m a senior and my girlfriend is a junior.  I’ll be going off to college pretty far away next year, and my girlfriend is obviously staying around here. I think that I should break up with her, but I still like her a lot.  What should I do?
From,
What to do?

Dear What:

I don’t know how to put this lightly, but dump her. This happens to a lot of high school couples, and it seldom ends up good.  Besides, you’ll be going to college.  You’re not going to want to have a high school girlfriend around all of those college ladies. It just wouldn’t be right. So, do the right thing and right before you leave for school this summer, tell her you don’t want to have a long distance relationship. It will be a lot easier for the both of you.
From,
Justin

 Dear To Do:

I want you to relax. This kind of situation happens to several people and is not an abnormal fear. You need to take a few steps back and examine your relationship. How important is this girl to you? Can you see yourself staying with her through college?  You might also want to look at how far away your college is from home. If you know that she is the one for you, stay in the relationship. But, if you decide to break it off with her, do it gently and let her know you want to remain friends. There are plenty of fish in the sea.
Hope it works out!
Candice

Just when I was starting to think West Central drama couldn’t get any better—more funny, more graceful, more entertaining—I discovered I was wrong. The drama department’s Saturday night presentation of The Wedding Singer was solid proof.

Last year’s spring musical, Grease, stunned the school and the community, leaving everyone wanting more. On Saturday lines of eager fans started to build before the auditorium doors were opened. Expectations were high this year, and based on the thundering approval of the enchanted audience, they were met with brilliance. The crowd was left speechless, but the same thing was running through all of our minds: “You guys are good!” Continue Reading
