One of the characteristics of winter break that makes it so thrilling is the restless build-up to Christmas. For weeks people find ways to busy themselves until the big day that’s circled on the calendar, while families prepare their homes to celebrate faith, friendship and the gift of being together. The only problem with the elation of the day is the inevitable deflation that follows when we realize there’s nothing to look forward to for quite some time.

A needy family from the West Central community, however, is still enjoying the surprises that the generosity of the National Honor Society brought them on Christmas. An NHS fundraiser started in December raised $210 to purchase presents for children who would otherwise wake up to find nothing under the tree. Additional solicitation secured a $100 donation from WalMart, bringing the total amount raised to $310. Central Valley Community Church did their part to help the family by providing their Christmas Day meal.

NHS advisor Sherry Knutson was pleased with the results of the project. “The NHS put together a really fun fundraiser for our December service project, and I know students really enjoyed pieing their teachers,” she said. NHS President Shannon Miller was also grateful for the effort of the group, adding, “Everyone’s hard work paid off. People were happy to get out of SRB for a great cause.”

“The difference West Central students made in the lives of strangers cannot be understated,” Miller continued. “They truly did make the season a little brighter, perhaps giving the days that follow some meaning after all.”

Gathering up the courage to pull on the running shoes and go out for a winter jog can be a rewarding experience, but it takes guts. First you win the mental struggle against your brain, which is perfectly content in your warm home, and tell yourself you’re going to do it. You pull yourself out of your cozy chair, don a sweatshirt, stocking cap and gloves, and tie your laces slowly, preparing for the fierce onslaught nature has created. You step onto the porch, inhale a deep breath of crisp, bone-chilling purity, and prepare to do battle. Half of it is already won. Continue Reading

The West Central marching band gave performances at the most highly contested competition of the season last Saturday. The band competed at an the AA level at the festival of bands, and although members beat scores from last year, they placed fourth in Parade with a score of 74.7 and seventh in Field with 63.4.

Junior Krista Jacobsen said of the performance, “We’ve been putting in a lot of time at morning practices, and it’s good to see our scores improve.”

The band roster was not competing in its entirety, however. Administrative officials have decided to withhold the privilege middle school students had to march with the high school band in order to review the policy of middle school participation in high school activities. Middle school competitors did not compete on Saturday.

“The middle school students have been a major asset to our program, and their involvement will help our band now and in the future,” said senior Brianna Titus. “I hope the fine arts department and athletic programs at West Central can reach a level of equality once a decision is made.”

The next marching band competition will be the River City Band Festival, held this Saturday, Oct. 8, in Chamberlain.
