The nice weather we’ve had throughout the winter season has only made the anticipation for summer vacation greater.  With only five Mondays left of the 2011-2012 school year, students are finding it harder to pay attention and easier to slack off.

Senior Dylan Brynjulson commented, “I’m extremely excited for summer. I’m looking forward to no school and working to make more money than I am now because I need it for college. I’m slacking off so bad in all of my classes; senioritis hit me like sophomore year. The worst part about summer getting closer is that waking up in the morning seems to be getting harder every day.”

Although “senioritis” is at a high in the school for the senior class, the underclassmen are just as ready to be done with school. “I’m so excited for summer, so I can play more softball,” said sophomore Alanna Schmeichel. Freshman Brite Edberg added, “Yeah, I’m very excited for summer and not having school because it’s a lot less stress to not worry about homework.” Summer can be all fun and games for most high school students, but junior Christian Witt is planning to work all summer. Students may be slacking off as the end comes, but Spanish teacher Kimberly Schmidt is doing everything but that. “I get panicky thinking about all the things I haven’t taught yet,” commented Schmidt.

Being anywhere but school is on students’ minds as summer approaches. Slacking in class, not finishing homework, no motivation to get up in the mornings. Some may call it lazy, but it seems to be a case of summer fever that has hit West Central, and there is nothing more to it.

WCNN: A Challenge and an Adventure of News Media

News Media has been a class offered at West Central for 10 years. First being offered as a basic journalism class, News Media has become so much more. The class includes three sections that are offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors that create vodcasts, podcasts, Livewires (lunchtime newsletters) and monthly news stories.

For the past three years, News Media has become more advanced, largely due to this year’s hard-working seniors, who have worked hard to create the vodcast that is now called WCNN (West Central News Network). Not only have they created WCNN, they have managed to keep it up and running and keep the public entertained. WCNN was created to keep the community informed about school news, but what people might not have expected is that it brings you the news in fun and creative ways.

Creating WCNN was a challenge and adventure all in its own. The seniors who created it and been a part of the News Media staff all of their high school career have more to take away from the class than just WCNN. “I’ve been in News Media for three years, and it has been very beneficial. I’ve got to spend quality time with Joe and Dusty, and it’s helped me with my people skills and writing ability,” said senior Alex Qualm. Senior Dustin Ortman commented, “I have learned to be productive on my own.”

These seniors will be passing on the WCNN production to the younger students in News Media and will be leaving with memories and skills that will help the younger students as they begin a new journey in their lives.

Is obesity child abuse? A social worker in Ohio thinks so. An 8-year-old Cleveland boy was recently taken from his family and placed in foster care after case workers said that his mother wasn’t doing enough to control his weight. The boy weighed over 200 pounds; an average 8-year-old weighs about about 56. A woman in South Carolina was charged with criminal neglect because her 14-year-old son, Alex, weighed 555 pounds.
