On your mark, get set, “Bam,” the gun goes off and the race begins. Coming off a defending State Championship title, the Lady Trojans look to do it again. Senior Emily Mammenga thinks the track season is going “very well” with the Lady Trojans still undefeated.

Brian Voss is in his first year as head coach for the boys track team. They were runners-up last year and look to improve. Voss said, “We have a great core of guys this year, and I plan on winning it this year.” Both teams look very strong.

Senior Emily Mammenga said, “A number of girls have already qualified. Hanna Wahl in the 3200 meter, I’ve qualified in the 800 meter, and then the 4×800 meter.” At the Early Bird, West Central won with 131 points. At the Fighting Cougar meet the girls again brought home the gold with 147 points. At the Danielsen Relays at McCook the girls dominated, beating the second place team by 85 points.

For the boys’ track team there are a lot of people that are close to qualifying. Senior Dustin Ortman said, “David Mulbah has qualified in the high jump and Cody Bussell is only two inches away. The relays usually come around about mid-season; Anthony and I are very close in the hurdles, and Anthony is also close in the long jump. More will definitely come as the season progresses.” Dustin is also very happy with the new coach saying, “He is an awesome coach.” Dustin also commented, “I really like the way things are going this year, with all the coaches working together. I really hope he stays head coach next year.”

Being student of the month is not an easy task to accomplish. To win the award, students need to show their willingness to learn, along with showing their character in the classroom and in the hallways.

Senior Dustin Kleba is the son of Ken and Robin Kleba, and brother of Kim Kleba. When he learned that he won student of the month, he felt like he was on top of the world. He is in many activities which include: Sheltered Reality, choir, musical, fall play, Oral Interp and One Act. When asked why he thought he got student of the month, he responded, “I try really hard, and I have Joe Schartz as a role model.”

Junior Cole Jorgensen is the son of Dawn and Brad Jorgensen and brother of Kailee and Jada. He is very honored to have been selected for student of the month. Jorgensen participates in basketball and football. Cole thinks he was awarded student of the month because he enjoys going to school, and he will also do his best to make it enjoyable for him and others.

Sophomore Alanna Schmeichel is the daughter of Allen and Kira Schmeichel and sister of Kaitlyn. When asked about how it felt to get student of the month she responded, “I didn’t even know I was student of the month.” She currently plays on a softball team during the summer.

Freshman Rachel Schartz is the daughter of Frank and Anne Schartz and is the sister of Joe and Tom. She participates in volleyball, track and the musical. She commented on why she believes she won the award. “I think I have a good work ethic and leadership.”

They’re small, blue and full of energy. They returned from their homeland, Belgium, to watch the West Central girls last Monday. The theme was royal blue, but we had the Smurfs show up. The Smurfs were seniors who decided to do something out of the ordinary.

The idea was formulated by Danny Kapperman and Shannon Miller. The main character of the Smurfs was Andrew Ideker, playing Papa Smurf. Paxton Steen and Melinda Knuth gave us an inside look as to why Andrew was picked to be Papa Smurf.  Melinda said, ”We picked him because he has a beard.” Paxton agreed, saying, “Because he has a beard and fits the role.” Melinda and Paxton both dressed up as Smurfs, too.

The girls’ team ended up winning the game with the support of the Smurfs. The Smurfs then returned to their village in Belgium where you can control them from your iPod, iPhone or Droid. Download Smurf Village to experience this life-changing game at the iTunes app store or Android market.

Last Friday the West Central Trojans battled the Milbank Bulldogs. The Trojans were coming off a 47-7 win over Jackson Central County. Milbank played Britton/Hecla and won by a large margin. Milbank is a very strong team, projected as the state runner-up, and many think that their quarterback, Nick Mears, is the best in the state.

The Trojans came out swinging after stopping the Bulldogs short of the end zone of the opening drive. Senior Dalton Kuehl ran 55 yards for a touchdown as the Trojans went up by seven. The Trojan defense again cut Milbank short. Kuehl took advantage of it and took it to the house the first play of the Trojans’ drive. West Central took off from there and routed the Bulldogs 44-7. The Trojans were led by Kuehl, who had 181 rushing yards. Senior Devon Blaine was close behind with 121 yards.

Head coach Kent Mueller was very proud of his team. “We go up to Milbank and beat one of the top contenders for the state title and held one of the best quarterbacks in the state to only seven points.” This week is the Trojans’ bye week as they will be getting ready for the first round of the playoffs, where they will probably see Sisseton. We asked junior Josh Auble how he thought the team looks for the playoffs; his response was,”We’re ready to go, but we need to get better every day in practice leading up to our first game.”
